Essential Functions: (Must be able to perform these functions with or without a reasonable accommodation). • Controls water treatment plant operations in accordance with all established regulations, standards, and procedures; conducts visual plant inspections and monitors plant operations/processes to ensure proper operations and to detect equipment failures, potential leaks, or other problem situations; makes adjustments in plant operations as appropriate; performs preventive maintenance checks and procedures on plant equipment; reports faulty equipment or problem situations to appropriate personnel. • Operates water treatment plant equipment to maintain adequate water flow, proper water treatment, and proper plant functions; records metered water flow gallons pumped; records hours of operation of pumps and motors; documents amount of chemicals used in a twenty-four hour period; determines proper dosage of chemicals for water system; administers additional chemicals when required; maintains proper tank levels; inspects pump motors and chemical feed equipment; adjusts chemical feeds as needed to meet regulatory requirements; visually inspects wells and records data at well sites; maintains contact chamber reservoirs; maintains corrosion control test sites; constructs bacteriological sample sites; reconditions dry chemical volumetric feeders; services and repairs chlorinators and metering pumps; installs water treatment chemical feed equipment; maintains vertical turbine pumps; operates and troubleshoots induction motors; flushes fire hydrants for water quality; troubleshoots problems in field as needed; maintains generators. • Collects water samples from various sources or stages of processing for chemical analysis and chemical control testing; sends samples to state laboratory for bacteriological analysis; analyzes daily water quality samples; conducts daily chemical tests to control quality and to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations; records all test results; interprets microbiological reports. • Utilizes computerized supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system to monitor and control plant operations; monitors and adjusts SCADA settings as needed. • Reads and monitors gauges, meters, and charts to ensure proper plant operations; maintains logs/records of plant operations, meter/gauge readings, test results, chemical applications, equipment operations, and other data; maintains computer records. • Communicates status of plant operations to supervisor or other appropriate personnel; communicates information pertaining to current plant conditions, malfunctioning equipment, problem situations or other issues. • Performs plant maintenance, building maintenance, grounds maintenance, or general/manual tasks in support of department operations; fabricates parts for use in repair of equipment; digs trenches and shovels materials; loads/unloads materials; lifts/moves heavy materials. • Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep plant facilities, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, calibrating equipment, performing minor repairs, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment. • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals. • Assists in maintaining inventory of department equipment, chemicals, parts, and supplies; organizes materials to facilitate identification and location of items; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new or replacement materials. • Assists in coordinating or conducting special projects as assigned. • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, lists, activity reports, flow charts, water loss sheets, well readings, laboratory reports, regulatory reports, maintenance records, production reports, statistical analyses, parts requisitions, chemical orders, or other documents. • Provides customer service; responds to questions or complaints involving water quality, water leaks or other issues; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution. • Regular attendance is required as outlined in the company’s attendance policy including working some overtime, holidays and weekends. Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: (these are required to perform the essential functions of the job). • Must be able to operate various machinery, equipment and tools associated with plant operations, which may include a utility truck, volumetric dry feeder, induction motor, chlorinator, vertical centrifugal pump, vertical turbine pump, metering pump, drum pump, SCADA monitoring system, digital cylinder scale, generator, air compressor, meters, gauges, spectrophotometer, scales, laboratory paraphernalia, self-contained breathing apparatus, drill, grinder, diagnostic instruments, mechanic tools, carpentry tools, valve wrenches, hand tools, testing materials, radio communications equipment, or general office equipment. • Must be able to operate a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, Internet, e-mail, or other computer applications. • Must maintain a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws/regulations as they pertain to position. • Must be able to perform job task and exercise independent judgment with a high level of accuracy. • Ability to handle multiple tasks effectively, work under pressure and to prioritize. • Must be able to proficiently read, write and communicate clearly in English. • Must be able to maintain a positive and professional attitude and an effective working relationship with, and among coworkers. • Must be able to travel throughout the Baldwin County area regularly and out of town occasionally. • Ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages; may include ability to perform mathematical operations with fractions; may include ability to compute discount, interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion; may include ability to calculate surface areas, volumes, weights, and measures. • Must possess effective communication skills with ability to handle difficult people or situations. • Must be able to use hands, fingers and wrist repetitively, using a keyboard. • Must be able to stand and walk around regularly, both inside and outside, sometimes in inclement weather and on uneven terrain. • Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull objects and materials in excess of 50 lbs. Experience and Education Requirements • High school diploma or GED; and • Vocational/technical training in water treatment plant operations; and • Two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving water treatment plant operations, SCADA system operations, and equipment maintenance; or • Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. • Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama Grade II Water Treatment Plant Operator License. • Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver’s license and be insurable. • Must pass a Drug Screen, physical and criminal background check. Working Conditions Potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, fumes, machinery, electric currents, traffic hazards, water hazards, bright/dim light, hazardous materials.
